Ecotone is a leading-edge technology company within the new field of Underwater Hyperspectral Imaging (UHI), established specifically to unlock the treasure trove of concealed data through Underwater Hyperspectral Imaging (UHI).
Our products are based on well-established research conducted at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and our own highly-focused R&D team.
Based on pioneering research
Underwater Hyperspectral Imaging is the result of the pioneering work by NTNU professor and Ecotone founder, Geir Johnsen. Ecotone was originally founded as a spin-off from NTNU when the potential of UHI was first realised, and subsequently it has been further developed in consultation with some of the world’s top companies within aquaculture, oil and gas.
A combination of precision optics, tough mechanical construction, a database of spectral signatures and advanced software makes UHI a unique product. We are the only provider of this type of technology now patented in 15 countries.
Scientists and commercial customers have used UHI to date for such purposes as monitoring coral and sponge habitats. A number of new applications are soon ready for launch as research and development progresses.
Data from the light reflected of the corals is compiled into a hyperspectral image.
On the image above a benthic species have been detected and highlighted to show the distribution of the species.
